MITS

The MITS Altair 8800, released in 1975, was, if not the first personal computer, definitely the first commercially successful personal computer.

The Altair bears little resemblance to any current computer. The front panel consisted of switches and lights. It didn't come with a keyboard or monitor (they were available later). Programs were entered in binary through the switches on the front panel.

The Altair 8800 probably also holds the title of 'first computer to be cloned.' The IMSAI 8080 being the holder of the reciprocal title 'first computer clone.'

My computer collection does not yet contain an Altair 8800. It is mentioned here because of its significance in the development of the personal computer. If you have an Altair 8800 that you would be willing to donate to my museum, please send email to scott@saskatoon.com
